First attested as optie aeker, dair nu die zypkerc op staet in 1415. Compound of nieuw (new), Middle Dutch loes (drainage channel) and drecht (ferry, watercourse). The toponym contrasts with Oud-Loosdrecht. Formerly called de Zijpe.
