Unknown. Possibly an alteration from *𑀪𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*bhuṭṭa), from भृष्ट (bhṛṣṭa, “fallen”), from भृश् (bhṛś, “to fall (down)”), the weak form of भ्रंश् (bhraṃś, “to fall, lose, slip, deviate from”) (whence भ्रंश (bhraṃśa, “deviation”)).
