Unknown. Possibly an alteration from *𑀪𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*bhuṭṭa), from भृष्ट (bhṛṣṭa, fallen), from भृश् (bhṛś, to fall (down)), the weak form of भ्रंश् (bhraṃś, to fall, lose, slip, deviate from) (whence भ्रंश (bhraṃśa, deviation)).
