Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Unknown. Possibly a borrowing from Baltic: compare Lithuanian šonine (“annex, side chamber”), from šonas (“side”). Has also been compared also with Permic words meaning 'warm': Proto-Permic *šɔnit[1]. Both comparisons, the Baltic[2] and the Uralic[3], are both semantically and phonetically unlikely. Seems to contain the suffix + *-ëh.
