Proto-Italic
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *wṓkʷs (“speech, voice”), an o-grade root noun of *wekʷ- (“to speak”). The vowel was changed from kʷ to simply a k; a more logical descendent of *wṓkʷs would have had something like wokʷos or *wṓkʷos, which would logically give Latin vox the base voqu- or vōqu-.
