Etymology

Per Derksen, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰowbʰ-eye-, causative/iterative of the root *gʰewbʰ-. Compare *gỳbnǫti (to perish). Also cognate with *gъbnǫti (to bend). Other scholars reconstruct the PIE root differently; see discussion under Proto-Balto-Slavic *gúbtei.
