From Middle High German rëgenboge, from Old High German reginbogo, from Proto-West Germanic *regnabogō. Equivalent to Regen (rain) + Bogen (bow, arch, arc). Compare Dutch regenboog, English rainbow, Yiddish רעגנבויגן‎ (regnboygn‎), Danish regnbue, Icelandic regnbogi.
