From Middle High German schabe (“scraper, chaff, moulding; moth, cockroach”), from Old High German scaba (“scraper, plane”), from Proto-Germanic *skabō (“scraper”). Cognate with Dutch schaaf (“plane”). Also related to German Low German Schabbe (“mange, scabies”), English scab.
