From Ottoman Turkish آماج‎ (amaç), from Old Anatolian Turkish آماج‎ (amaç), اوماج‎ (omaç), from Proto-Turkic *um-. Cognate with Karakhanid اَمَجْ‎ (amač)[1], Azerbaijani amac, Southern Altai амаду (amadu).
