Etymology
From 𒂍 (bīt, “house”) + 𒁾𒁀 (ṭuppim, “of the tablet”), literally “tablet house”. Compare Biblical Hebrew בַּיִת (báyiṯ, “house; school”) and Mishnaic Hebrew בֵּית סֵפֶר (beṯ séfɛr, “school”, literally “book house”). Compare the formation Persian دبستان.
