Etymology

From Proto-Greater Central Philippine *buhay (“live (long)”) (cf. Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value), Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value), Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value), and Buhi'non Bikol, Libon Bikol, Miraya Bikol buway), possibly related to Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *bihaʀ (compare Sambali biyay, Kapampangan bie, and Ivatan vyay). Possible doublet of bihag. Compare also Cebuano buhi, Hiligaynon buhi, Agusan Manobo buhi, and Ata Manobo bui which came from Proto-Southern Philippine *buhiʔ (“live”).
