From Proto-Mon-Khmer *cgəj. Cognate with Khmer ឆ្កែ (chkae, “dog”), Bahnar sơke (“wild boar”) and Ngeq cakɛː ("dog").
Khasi skei (“Indian muntjac, barking deer”) might be a loanword from a Sino-Tibetan language, cf. Burmese ချေ (hkye, “barking deer”), S'gaw Karen တခံ (takhee, “deer”), Jingpho chäkhji (“barking deer”), and is not directly related to the other Austroasiatic items.
