Etymology
From Proto-Ugric *palɣɜ (“village”). Cognates include Northern Mansi па̄вэл (pāwèl), Eastern Khanty пугәӆ.[1] Relationship to the Finnish verbs palvella (“to serve”), palvoa (“to worship”) has also been proposed.
