From Proto-Ugric *palɣɜ (village). Cognates include Northern Mansi па̄вэл (pāwèl), Eastern Khanty пугәӆ.[1] Relationship to the Finnish verbs palvella (to serve), palvoa (to worship) has also been proposed.
