From Middle Low German vrouwentimmer from vrouwe + -n- + timmer. Cognate with Danish fruentimmer, Norwegian Bokmål fruentimmer, Norwegian Nynorsk fruentimmer, German Frauenzimmer and Dutch vrouwenzimmer.
