From Proto-Celtic *kankā, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱak- (“branch”). Cognate with Sanskrit शाखा (śā́khā), Lithuanian šakà (“branch”) and Gothic 𐌷𐍉𐌷𐌰 (hōha, “plough”).
