Apparently coined by Polish legal scholar Raphael Lemkin in 1943 or 1944 in reference to the Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust. From the stem of Ancient Greek γένος (génos, “race, kind”) + Latin -cīda (“killing, killer”).
