Borrowed from French glacier, from Franco-Provençal gllaciér, from Vulgar Latin *glaciārium, a derivative of Latin glaciēs (ice), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gel- (to be cold; freeze). First attested in English in 1744 per the OED.
