Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish قوزای (kuzay),[1] قوزی (kuzey),[2] ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kuŕ (northern slope). Cognate with Turkmen guzaý (shaded side of a mountain), Azerbaijani quzey (north) and possibly Uzbek kungay. Compare also dated kuz (shadowed, sunless).
