Etymology

Initially in the spelling ranstig, borrowed from Middle French rance + -ig, from Latin rancidus (rancid). The current spelling, attested since the late eighteenth century, may have been influenced from Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value), attested since the early eighteenth century, from Dutch ranstig, though this is disputed.[1]
