From Ottoman Turkish صیغیرجق (sığırcık), from Proto-Turkic *sïgïrčïk (“starling”). Cognate with Azerbaijani sığırçın (“starling”), Kyrgyz чыйырчык (cıyırcık, “starling”), Bashkir сыйырсыҡ (sıyırsıq, “starling”), Tatar сыерчык (sıyerçıq, “grouse”), Chuvash шӑнкӑрч (šănk̬ărč, “starling”).
