Etymology 1

From Old High German firlāzzan, from Proto-Germanic *fralētaną. Cognate with Dutch verlaten, archaic and/or dialectal English forlet, and Middle Low German vorlaten. Equivalent to ver- (for-) + lassen (let, leave).
