2. (East Germany, Bavaria, Austria) three-quarters of an hour before, 45 minutes before (used with the number of the following hour)

   Wir treffen uns um viertel zwei.

   We’re meeting at quarter past one.

The gender of the expression "viertel+noun" is the gender of the noun.

Unlike the construction halb zwei (“half past one, one-thirty”), constructions like viertel zwei and dreiviertel zwei are restricted to the eastern and southern parts of the German-speaking area, and may not be understood elsewhere. In the remaining parts of the German-speaking area, the usual constructions are Viertel nach eins (“quarter past one”) and Viertel vor zwei (“quarter to two”).
