From Proto-Hmong-Mien *-ʔræi (“vegetable”). Cognate with Iu Mien lai. Most likely a recent borrowing from Vietnamese rau ("leafy greens", "leaf vegetable") with "r" producing the [ʐ] or [z] consonant while the vowels correspond similarly.
