I pulled a snapshot of the Lightning Network via lncli describegraph with my Umbrel node in July 2022. Everything worked fine and I analyzed the snapshot: ~18k nodes, ~85k channels, ~4k BTC total capacity which was similar to the data shown on 1ML, Amboss, etc.

However, I tried the same now multiple times in October 2022 and the snapshot only includes parts of the network: ~8k nodes, ~30k channels, ~2.3k BTC total capacity (1ML and Amboss currently show ~17k, ~82k, ~5k).

Any idea what might be the reason for this? Any suggestions how to fix it?

  • LN devs dont care about privacy. There are lot of reasons which I found recently trying LND. **Reason for less activity is market**. It will be more in next few months and then again same. –  Oct 22 '22 at 00:33
  • LN is only marketed as layer2 that solves everything and some projects building on top mostly custodial. Even a teenager script kiddie can break most of them if even incentives or for fun. –  Oct 22 '22 at 01:14

@1440000bytes That seems unrelated to this question. OP isn't asking why the network is smaller, but why they're seeing only a small portion of it. – Pieter Wuille Oct 22 '22 at 15:07
