Non-Fungible Tokens. Collectable digital artefacts associated with specific coins (specific units of money).

Units of money in a currency usually have the property of fungibilty. Two units of equal face-value are treated as equally desirable and of equal actual value in transactions.

Non-Fungible tokens do not have that property. Some people compare NFTs to collectible products such as trading cards. These can often be bought at a fixed price but some may develop a higher value.

Why weren’t Inscriptions possible before taproot by just using OP_RETURN to store the data?

With the recent rise of Inscriptions using the script in the taproot input, why wasn't this possible previously just using OP_RETURN? What is special about the taproot upgrade that made this feasible to do?
