Biografia

Estreou no teatro em 1931. Ganhou destaque com o filme Lost Horizon (1937), dirigido por Frank Capra.

Recebeu três prêmios Emmy, em 1958, 1959 e 1960, pela atuação como Margaret Anderson, uma mãe e dona-de-casa exemplar, em Father Knows Best (br: Papai Sabe Tudo), série de televisão estadunidense de sucesso que foi apresentada de 1954 a 1960, e na qual contracenou com Robert Young, que fazia o papel de Jim Anderson, seu marido.

Fez também Amanda, a mãe do Sr. Spock em Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Muito católica, foi casada durante 65 anos com Edgar Bethune Ward, morto em 2000, e com quem teve dois filhos.

Tem uma estrela na Calçada da Fama, em 6356 Hollywood Boulevard.
