ähneln
German
Etymology
17th century, alteration of earlier ähnlichen, from Middle High German anelīchen, which is equivalent to ähnlich (“similar”) + -en. The contemporary form is possibly based on the association of ähnlich with the etymologically unrelated Ahn (“ancestor”), thus derived as Ahn + -eln; compare French s’apparenter à.
