Middle Armenian

Etymology

From Old Armenian *կիպ (*kip), reflected in the verb կբնիմ (kbnim), borrowed from Iranian. Compare Persian کیپ (kîp), Kurdish kîp, کِپ (kip, tight) and the other Iranian borrowings: Azerbaijani kip, dialectal Turkish kip (tight), Karaim kip (firm, strong). Ultimately perhaps from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *keh₂p- (to grab, stick to); note the senses of կպչել (kpčʿel).
