Etymology
Old Armenian փաղփաղիմ (pʿałpʿałim) and the synonymous փողփողիմ (pʿołpʿołim) are usually said to be a reduplication of *փաղ- (*pʿał-) and *փող- (*pʿoł-) respectively, by-forms of փայլ (pʿayl), all supposedly inherited from Proto-Indo-European.[1][2][3][4][5] Similar formations are found in Zan: see Laz ჶარჶალაჲ (farfalay).
