From Proto-Indo-Iranian *tigmás, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tig-mó-s, from *(s)teyg- (“to be sharp, pointed”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬌𐬖𐬭𐬀 (tiγra, “sharp”), Old Persian 𐎫𐎥𐎼 (t-g-r /tigra/), Persian تیز (tez, “sharp”), Ancient Greek στίζω (stízō), στῐ́γμᾰ (stígma), English stick.
