From Proto-Indo-European *(s)tig-s-nó-s, from *(s)teyg- (to be sharp); with an unexplained lengthening of the first vowel. Related to तेजस् (tejas, sharpness), तिग्म (tigma) and also to Avestan 𐬙𐬌𐬖𐬭𐬀 (tiγra, sharp), Persian تیز (tez, sharp).
