From Proto-Indo-European *dʰers- (to be bold, dare) from an *-s- extension of *dʰer- (to hold, support). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *dьrzъ (daring), Ancient Greek θρᾰσῠ́ς (thrasús, daring, reckless) and English dare.
