Ultimately from Middle Chinese (MC kwa|kwaH, “to surpass, to exceed; than”). Cognate with Thai กว่า (gwàa, than), Lao ກວ່າ (kuā, than, more than), Shan ၵႂႃႇ (kwàa, to go), Vietnamese quá (to exceed; very, excessive).
