Etymology
First attested as felisa after 786. Likely derived from the dative plural form of a hydronym, derived in turn from Proto-Indo-European *pel (“swamp, marsh”) suffixed with the hydronymic suffix *isa. The element noord (“north”) was added to distinguish the settlement from Velsen-Zuid.
