First attested as felisa after 786. Likely derived from the dative plural form of a hydronym, derived in turn from Proto-Indo-European *pel (swamp, marsh) suffixed with the hydronymic suffix *isa. The element zuid (south) was added to distinguish the settlement from Velsen-Noord.
