From Middle High German genüegen, from Old High German ginuogen, from Proto-West Germanic *ganōgijan, from Proto-Germanic *ganōgijaną, from the adjective Proto-Germanic *ganōgaz (“enough, sufficient”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₂nóḱe (“he has reached, attained”), perfective of *h₂neḱ- (“to reach”). Cognate with Dutch genoegen, Icelandic nægja and Norwegian Nynorsk nøye.
