Disputed. Either:

1. From sh- (“dis-, ex-, de-”) +‎ pres (“wait”) +‎ -ë (“-ing, -ion”, noun suffix, f.) > Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value).

   Same construct as in Latin ex- + spectō + -ātiō > exspectātiō (“waiting, suspense”).

   Or like construct in German er- + wart + -ung > Erwartung (“expectation”).

2. From Latin sperans, sperantia, from spero (“hope”). Compare Albanian shpërej "to hope" (doublet of shpresoj, itself from shpresë) from Latin sperāre.[1]
