Sanskritization of Prakrit 𑀔𑁂𑀮𑁆- (khĕl-) (compare क्ष्वेल् (kṣvel, to leap, jump, play)), which is of unclear or possible substrate origin. Perhaps from the same word family as क्ष्वेल्, क्रीड् (krīḍ, to play; to jest), क्रीळति (krīḷati, to play), केल् (kel, to sport).
